At its meeting held January 29, 2008, the Board took the following action:

      Supervisor Burke made the following statement:

      "On November 8, 2006, the Board of Supervisors approved a reward offer of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Janet Altamirano and wounding of Nadina Mercado. The reward offer for this heinous crime was last extended on July 31, 2007, but will expire on February 1, 2008.

      "On Saturday, November 4, 2006, in the 2100 block of East 117th Street in the Willowbrook area of Los Angeles Janet Altamirano, age 12, was shot and later died at St. Francis hospital. Nadina Mercado, age 15, was also shot and suffered minor wounds.

      "The shooting started when detectives from the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Compton task force served a search warrant at a residence in the area. Deputies came under gunfire from one or more suspects, who fired an unknown-type assault rifle from across the street.

      "Janet Altamirano leaves behind her mother and grandparents."

      Therefore, on motion of Supervisor Burke, seconded by Supervisor Antonovich, unanimously carried (Supervisor Molina being absent), the Board extended the $10,000 reward offered for any information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of Janet Altamirano and the wounding of Nadina Mercado, in the 2100 block of East 117th Street, in the Willowbrook area, on Saturday, November 4, 2006.


NOTICE OF $10,000.00 REWARD
OFFERED BY THE
LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles has extended the $10,000 reward offered for any information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of Janet Altamirano and the wounding of Nadina Mercado, in the 2100 block of East 117th Street, in the Willowbrook area, on Saturday, November 4, 2006.

Any person having any information related to this crime is requested to call Detectives Traci Gonzales or Richard Tomblin at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5630 and refer to Report No. 006-18692-2136-011.

The terms of the reward provide that:

  • The information given that leads to the determination of the identity, the apprehension and conviction of any person or persons must be given no later than July 30, 2008. All reward claims must be in writing and shall be received no later than September 28, 2008.
  • The total County payment of any and all rewards shall in no event exceed $10,000 and no claim shall be paid prior to conviction unless the Board of Supervisors makes a finding of impossibility of conviction due to the death or incapacity of the person or persons responsible for the crime or crimes.
  • The County reward may be apportioned between various persons and/or paid for the conviction of various persons as the circumstances fairly dictate.

Any claims for the reward funds should be filed no later than September 28, 2008 with the Executive Officer of the Board of Supervisors, 500 West Temple Street, Room 383 Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, Los Angeles, California 90012, Attention: Janet Altamirano and Nadina Mercado Reward Fund.
