At its meeting held August 14, 2007, the Board took the following action:

      Supervisor Molina and Supervisor Knabe made the following statement:

      "On August 5, 2007, at approximately 11:30 p.m., retired 21-year veteran Los Angeles Police Officer Ruben Whittington was shot and killed while he waited for a tow truck to help fix a flat tire. He was on his way home from his business in Walnut. This heinous crime took place on Lemon Avenue in Walnut. Authorities suspect a robbery attempt, but no suspects have been identified or apprehended. A resident of Diamond Bar, Mr. Whittington left a wife and two children.

      "The cities of Walnut and Diamond Bar are each posting $10,000 rewards, for a total of $20,000. We have been asked to assist the Sheriff's Department in solving this senseless murder by matching the cities' efforts with an additional $10,000 from each office, for a total of $20,000."

      Therefore, on motion of Supervisor Molina, seconded by Supervisor Knabe, unanimously carried (Supervisor Antonovich being absent), the Board established a $20,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of retired Los Angeles Police Officer Ruben Whittington, who was shot and killed while he waited for a tow truck to help fix a flat tire on Lemon Ave., in the City of Walnut on August 5, 2007, at approximately 11:30 p.m.


NOTICE OF $20,000.00 REWARD
OFFERED BY THE
LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles is offering a $20,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of retired Los Angeles Police Officer Ruben Whittington, who was shot and killed while he waited for a tow truck to help fix a flat tire on Lemon Ave., in the City of Walnut on August 5, 2007, at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Any person having any information related to this crime is requested to call Detective Kevin B. Lowe at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890 5604 and refer to Report No. 007-05994-2914-011.

The terms of the reward provide that:

  • The information given that leads to the determination of the identity, the apprehension and conviction of any person or persons must be given no later than November 12, 2007. All reward claims must be in writing and shall be received no later than January 11, 2008.
  • The total County payment of any and all rewards shall in no event exceed $20,000 and no claim shall be paid prior to conviction unless the Board of Supervisors makes a finding of impossibility of conviction due to the death or incapacity of the person or persons responsible for the crime or crimes.
  • The County reward may be apportioned between various persons and/or paid for the conviction of various persons as the circumstances fairly dictate.

Any claims for the reward funds should be filed no later than January 11, 2008 with the Executive Officer of the Board of Supervisors, 500 West Temple Street, Room 383 Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, Los Angeles, California 90012, Attention: Ruben Whittington Reward Fund.
